The history of
St Austell

St Austell is a BCN dayboat or butty, built in 1942 by Harris Bros of Bumblehole, Netherton. During World War II she was owned by Manchester Ship Canal Co (MSC) and based in Manchester docks as a fire boat.

After the war she remained under MSC ownership and was used in the transhipment of China Clay at Weston Point Docks which was transported to the Potteries. Her final role for MSC was a mud hopper from the Maintenance Department. In the early 1970’s she was purchased by the Boat and Butty Co, Runcorn and used as a camping butty paired with the motor Harry. In 1985 St Austell was purchased by Mike Illet, who lived on board whilst working on the gravel run on the River Soar with the Three Fellows Carrying. Mike also paired St Austell with the ex GUCC Co motor Chiswick and worked them as camping boats.

In 2000 we purchased St Austell and following major renovations we have recently started trading with her on the BCN.
